Mangroves and Kingfishers

Mangrove Kingfishers
Acrylic on canvas - 18"x24"

It is one of the most commonly seen kingfishers in Singapore- at the parks, gardens, mangroves and coastal areas.(Personally, I really cant make out the difference between the male and female) but I see a pair perched on the same branch, at the same place almost every day without fail. They take turns flying in and out of the hole on a tall sea almond tree and their calls echo throughout the evening. They come across as not very shy or scared of humans or other birds! On reading I found that they outnumber the others due to their aggressive behaviour:D I have also started using a lot of acrylic now. (For me, Pros - easier to clean, no smell of turpentine and fast drying. Cons- Lots of wastage and blending is a tad bit more difficult than oils)

Wow!!!! Another fantastic, truly realistic painting. I honestly feel that your paintings are so close to real photographs! May I ask if you take a photo as reference and then paint from it? If so, your photography skills must be fantastic too to capture these details. If you just do this all from memory, well, hats off to your amazing eyes/brain that holds so much detail!!!

Rupa: Thanks:)I didnt paint this from a photo. The kingfishers are from my sketches and the mangrove branch was based on a photo, but painted using my own tones. In fact at the end of the painting it felt surreal to me.
Veda: I am worried my oil paints will feel neglected:)
